Cuando se abarca el tema de cómo mejorar el transporte para avanzar a un futuro sustentable, existen dos abordajes: aquellos que creen que no es necesario cambiar los hábitos de uso de los automóviles, sino hacer a los mismos lo menos contaminantes posible (o, incluso, positivos en carbono); y quienes abogan por simplemente promover ciudades con menos autos y más espacios a escala humana. 

Pero, ¿cuál de estas alternativas apunta realmente a la sostenibilidad?

En un artículo de Grist de hace algunos días se mencionan algunos puntos interesantes en torno de esta discusión. Uno de los más importantes es el relacionado al uso de la tierra: el problema de la dependencia del auto no reside solamente en la contaminación que genera, sino en el desarrollo urbano que promueve. 

Para que las personas sigan conduciendo como ahora o más, se requieren más autopistas y más estacionamientos, lo cual irremediablemente desemboca en menos lugar para desarrollar espacios públicos. 

De acuerdo al artículo, los fabricantes de automóviles aseguran que la gente quiere más autos, más grandes y de mayor potencia. Pero es probable que eso no sea del todo cierto. 

Muchas personas pueden percibir que no quieren cambiar su estilo de vida y que quieren continuar conduciendo y utilizando sus autos como siempre, pero lo cierto es que el cuerpo y la mente piden lo contrario. 

Mientras que no abundan los estudios que demuestren que el estar encerrado en un vehículo dentro de un embotellamiento de tránsito es beneficioso para la salud o para el ánimo de las personas, recientemente fue probado que el contacto con espacios verdes a diario resulta positivo para el humor y el bienestar mental.

Seguramente los que piensan que "la solución" es crear automoviles mas eficientes se dediquen a la fabricacion, distribución o venta de estos. En lo personal; y hablo por algunos cuantos mas, creo que no hay "una solucion" como tal a este gran problema sino que hay una "gran solucion", compuesta de "pequeñas soluciones", y en este caso ambas propuestas forman parte de esa "Gran solucion". Tanto se debe racionalizar el uso del automovil unicamente para situaciones estrictamente necesaras, así como tambén se debe exigir que los automoviles que se usen sean mas eficientes en los recursos que emplean, de estos últimos no solo hay que tomar en cuenta el combustible o fuente de energia, sino tambien los recursos económicos y materiales que se emplean en su fabricacion; tanto los que componen al carro fisicamente, como los que estan detras y delante del proceso entero, que se incluye;como bien menciona la nota, a los espacios tan vitales que se transforman en estacionamientos, vias, cocheras, bodegas,etc. Hay que tomar en cuenta todo el proceso que hay detras de un automivil y todos los recursos de los que se debe hechar mano para este proceso concluya en la venta y uso de lo que aparente mente es solo un automovil mas. ¡No es posible que estemos mas dispuestos en invertir mas recursos en un automovil que en una persona! A ellos le diría que abrieran su mente a nuevas ideas, les diria que no le tengan miedo a que peligre su futuro, por que si contruimos uns sociedad mundial preocupada por las personas; y por lo tanto el medio ambiente que las rodea y forma prte de ellas, su futuro esta asegurado por sus indispensables hablidades y su condición inegable de humanos y seres vivos.
